Early Life
On Fire, Missions is pleased to take a look at Lecrae Devaughn Moore, who is a Christian rapper. Lecrae was born in 1979 and became an atheist. He became a drug user and adopted music as therapy for his despair. He later found hope for his life when he found God through extensive introspection and prayer. Lecrae implements his life experiences into his rap lyrics and desires to encourage the youth. Lecrae is a two-time Grammy winner and won a G.M.A. Dove Award for Artist of the Year in 2015. Lecrae is active in volunteer ministries and has published two books describing his life and belief in Christianity.
Prison Ministry
Lecrae is the co-owner and co-founder of Reach Records. Lecrae’s debut recording, “Real Talk,” was released in 2004. His third solo album, “Rebel,” was released in 2008 and became the first Christian hip-hop album to reach the top of the Billboard Gospel chart. Lecrae travels to America and spreads the message of how his life turned around when he found God. Lecrae often performs and testifies to the inmates that are incarcerated in prison. Lecrae has ministered in Riker’s Island, LA County Jail, Birmingham, AL jail, and Knoxville, TN jail. As a musical artist, Lecrae ministers a message of hope for the men left behind. In addition to Lecrae’s jail ministry, he has been a voice of peace against racism. In 2016, spoke at the “Knowledge through Narrative: Bridging the Racial Divide in America” hosted at Yale University in 2016.
